An evening with Tim Jarvis: recreating Ernest Shackleton’s 1916 Antarctic expedition
Join environmental scientist, adventurer, and 2024 SA Australian of the Year Tim Jarvis AM at the Salisbury Community Hub on Wednesday 12 March from 5pm to 7pm. Tim will share firsthand insights from his remarkable recreation of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary 1916 Antarctic expedition and discuss the urgent impact of climate change on the icy wilderness.
‘Re-creating Shackleton’s journey of survival was a lesson to me in the determination, optimism, and leadership needed to prevail against the odds,’ Tim said.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear Tim’s gripping stories of survival and gain a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges facing Antarctica today.
‘100 years ago, Shackleton’s goal was to save his men from the ice. Today it is the ice that needs saving from us and the human-induced climate change that threatens it,’ he said. His books Chasing Shackleton and The Unforgiving Minute will be available for purchase, with a book signing session following his talk.
‘I look forward to the City of Salisbury event at the Hub to talk to attendees about my Antarctic experiences,’
The Thin Ice VR experience is currently running in the Salisbury Community Hub, Monday to Friday with free sessions available until Friday 14 March.
Visitors can immerse themselves in a free virtual reality experience that transports them to Shackleton’s treacherous Antarctic expedition. This interactive journey highlights the challenges Shackleton and his crew faced, while also showcasing the dramatic environmental changes in Antarctica over the past century.
‘Thin Ice VR brings his story spectacularly to life at a time when we urgently need to learn from what he stood for to prevail against the challenges we face,’ Tim said.
City of Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM encourages the community take up the chance to see the expedition in an interactive way.
‘We are proud to partner with Tim Jarvis in presenting an incredible VR experience that re-creates the expedition lead by Ernest Shackleton and which highlights the impacts of climate change.
‘It’s amazing to think that Tim and his team undertook the expedition using the same food, gear and clothing as Shackleton did 100 years before them.’
