Pilgrim: A Japanese – Australian Art Journey
Throughout November, community members are invited to explore Pilgrim: A Japanese – Australian Art Journey, a captivating cross-cultural art exhibition at the Salisbury Community Hub.
This collaboration between renowned photographer Peter Hall and Japanese-Australian twins Lisa and Erica Hoy takes visitors on a journey through the twins’ first five years in Australia, documenting their experiences and exploration of a new home.
Through a series of striking images captured by Hall across diverse Aboriginal lands in South Australia, Pilgrim presents a unique blend of traditional Japanese and Australian elements.
The works incorporate torii – traditional Japanese gates commonly found at Shinto shrines and significant landmarks – which symbolise the transition from the mundane into the sacred. Set against Aboriginal lands in South Australia, each photograph captures a blend of cultural, social, and environmental discoveries.
Pilgrim offers fresh perspectives on local landscapes while providing insight into the twins’ experiences as self-identified global citizens, showcasing a blend of cultural influences sure to resonate with many modern-day Australians.
The exhibition arrives at a meaningful time for the City of Salisbury as we conclude the celebrations of our Japanese cultural festival, Matsuri on Mobara. This festival featured a series of Japanese-themed events and programs, including a special visit from delegates of our sister city, Mobara City, Japan.
During the visit, City of Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM and Mobara City Mayor Atushi Ichihara committed to maintaining the Sister City agreement, a link that was formally established in 2002.
Pilgrim: A Japanese – Australian Art Journey, will run from 1 November until 21 November 2024. To find out more, visit the event page on the City of Salisbury website.
