The Hive – a buzzing hub for skill development and support
The Burton Community Hub has officially transitioned to The Hive Community Resource Hub (The Hive).
As part of the City of Salisbury’s response to the rising cost of living and other challenges, this transformation follows community engagement that highlighted concerns around affordability and financial pressures. In response, we’ve reimagined the centre to better meet these needs, creating space for new services and programs focused on household costs, financial wellbeing, and food sustainability.
The Hive is an integral part of the City of Salisbury’s commitment to tackling cost of living, homelessness, and youth issues. It will feature a monthly Repair Café where people can learn how to fix broken items rather than replacing them. The Hive will also offer home maintenance programs that teach valuable DIY skills to save money, along with energy-saving tips to help reduce household energy costs.
To support financial wellbeing, The Hive is collaborating with agencies that provide small, no-interest loans, budgeting workshops, and financial counselling to help people better manage their expenses and reduce financial stress.
Addressing food security, the Hive’s community garden will offer a space to grow fresh produce. Other programs may include big-batch cooking lessons, teaching practical skills for cost-effective meal preparation.
The Hive will also look at providing free fitness programs, helping people stay active and healthy without the financial barriers of joining a gym.
We think The Hive will become a best practise model as we continue to evolve our services to meet the changing needs of our community.
We consulted with residents about the services they want and need to help address the rising cost-of-living. Building skills and accessing services to help navigate household and maintenance costs, financial wellbeing and food security were key issues identified.
We are keen to connect people to the networks and services they might need as well as providing opportunities locally to develop their skills and improve their financial security and wellbeing.
The Hive is a demonstration of the important role Councils play in their communities.
The Hive is open to all community members, and existing programs such as the walking group and seniors' friendship group will continue to keep people connected. The library remains at The Hive, with only a small number of under-borrowed titles relocated to other nearby libraries.
